David, IT Apprentice

Find out what it's like to learn, grow and develop your career at FFT.

Apprentice Spotlight: From Apprentice to IT Professional

Meet David, who began his career with FFT as an IT Support Apprentice and has since successfully completed his apprenticeship, gaining valuable experience and building a strong foundation for a future in IT.

We recently caught up with David to reflect on his apprenticeship journey, the skills he developed, challenges he overcame and the advice he would give to anyone considering an apprenticeship.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

“I chose an apprenticeship because it gave me the opportunity to learn and develop my skills while gaining real-world experience. It allowed me to build confidence, apply what I was learning in a work environment and learn from experienced colleagues.”

What made FFT a great place to complete your  apprenticeship?

“I couldn’t have asked for a better employer for my apprenticeship. The people are friendly and supportive, the leadership team encourages my development, and I was given plenty of opportunities to learn and grow.”

What did you enjoy most about your role?

“My favourite part of my role is working with people, helping colleagues solve IT issues and finding solutions to problems. I enjoyed building relationships across FFT and getting the satisfaction of knowing I have made someone’s day a little easier.”

What was the highlight of your apprenticeship?

“One of the biggest highlights was completing a project which required me to learn a new programme and use it to generate large amounts of data into a clear, presentable report. Starting from scratch, overcoming challenges and seeing the final result was incredibly rewarding.”

What was the biggest challenge of your apprenticeship?

“Time management was one of the biggest challenges for me. I was so engaged in my day-to-day work that balancing this with my apprenticeship assignments sometimes proved difficult. Learning how to manage my workload effectively was an important part of my development.”

How has your apprenticeship helped shape your career?

“My apprenticeship gave me a strong foundation in IT and helped me identify the areas I’m most interested in pursuing in the future, particularly cybersecurity and programming. The experience has given me valuable technical knowledge, practical skills and confidence that I can continue to build on throughout my career.”

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

“Stay open-minded and be ready to learn. An apprenticeship gives you a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience while studying. Take every chance to ask questions, get involved and learn from the people around you. It’s also important to be patient with yourself as you grow in the role. Skills and confidence will build over time.”
